This product serves as a corrosion inhibitor for copper and copper alloys, similar to benzotriazole (BTA). Commercial formulations may also include 4-methylbenzotriazole ([29878-31-7]) or a mixture of the two, collectively referred to as TTA. Benzotriazole-based inhibitors form insoluble, stable complexes with cuprous ions, which adsorb onto the metal surface to create a thin, stable, and inert protective film only about 5 × 10⁻⁷ cm thick. This film remains highly stable across a wide range of media, thereby providing effective protection for copper alloys. BTA exhibits excellent corrosion-inhibiting performance over a pH range of 5.5–10; however, in low-pH environments, TTA demonstrates superior inhibition compared with BTA. Other triazole compounds, such as triazole itself and naphthyltriazole, also possess some degree of corrosion inhibition for copper and copper alloys, but their effectiveness is generally inferior to that of BTA and TTA. Methylbenzotriazole is also employed in organic synthesis.
