    Boron-10, a stable isotope of boron, is used to absorb slow neutrons in nuclear reactors.  It produces high-energy alpha particles (helium nuclei) during this process. Naturally occurring boron has two stable isotopes, 10B and 11B, with relative abundations of 19.78% and 80.22%, respectively. 10B has 5 protons and 5 neutrons. Boron 10 has the unique characteristic of high absorption of neutron, and the absorption cross section of thermal neutron is 3837 target, which is an efficient thermal neutron absorber.
